All about fine-art metal prints

Fine-art metal prints are becoming more popular as people learn more about their benefits, so I thought I'd write about what they are and what I love about them.

As a photo-artist, I don't have an "original" artwork to sell along with reproduction prints, made by scanning the original. Instead, the print is the artwork. Typically, I create fine-art Giclee prints on heavy-weight archival paper. But more recently, with the advent of dye-sublimation printing, other substrates can be used. I now offer Chromaluxe metal prints as an option for larger prints. They are as archival as paper with fabulous rich colours yet are much more robust.

How are metal prints created?

The printer starts by making a special print onto sublimation transfer paper. This print is made in reverse (i.e., a mirror image). The sublimation paper print is layered over the metal sheet and then heat-pressed to fuse the dye onto the metal (which means the image now comes out the right way around). The paper is peeled back to reveal the print in all its gloriousness. If requested, the printer then adds a floating frame and packs the print up in a custom-built crate to protect it on its journey to you.

The printer peels back the sublimation paper to reveal "A Hidden World (kākāpō)".

Are metal prints heavy?

No, they are quite lightweight. They're heavier than a sheet of paper but much lighter than a print framed with glass and wood. The metal is aluminium, and it is very thin—just over a millimetre thick—but very strong and sturdy. It doesn't bend or buckle.

Are metal prints easy to damage?

No - they are scratch, fade, stain, and moisture resistant.

Will my metal print fade?

Your print is rated for up to 65 years under normal home lighting conditions before any fading might be noticeable.

Do metal prints cost more?

Yes and no. The print is more expensive than paper, but you have no additional framing costs (unless you choose to; see below). Overall, they are much cheaper than a regular framed paper print under UV resistant glass.

How do I hang a metal print on the wall?

My metal prints come with a float-frame hanger on the back. As soon as you receive them, you can hang them on your wall. This invisible frame makes the picture appear to float off the wall, giving it a stylish, contemporary look.

Can I frame my metal print?

Absolutely! If you're not keen on float frames, you can frame using traditional methods. The great thing about metal print framing is that you do not need any glass, which can be the most expensive part of the process. All you need is the outside frame. The framer can run a thin layer of rubber on the inside of the frame so that the print doesn't rub against the wood.

Can I hang the print in the bathroom or kitchen?

Yes! One of the big benefits of metal prints is that it's impervious to humidity. Metal prints are the perfect choice for humid areas of your home. If you're considering a bathroom reno, include them in your plans.

How do I keep the print clean?

Dust with a clean, dry cloth. If there are marks, such as fly specks, gently wipe them off with a clean, damp cloth. If the dog projectile vomits on it, you can use a gentle household cleaner or detergent (e.g., regular dishwashing liquid). Easy as!

Can I put the print outside?

Yes, but ideally, in a sheltered spot out of direct sun. Don't expect it to last quite as long though.

Are the prints signed and editioned?

To ensure my signature doesn't rub off, I sign the digital image before printing so that the signature and edition number is baked into the image. I don't use a template - each signature is uniquely hand written for each print. The prints also come with a certificate of authenticity.

Does the metal have a texture?

Not really - the metal is smooth, and I usually choose a matte rather than a gloss finish as it suits my art better.

Is the metal corrugated?

Although you can print on corrugated metal (that looks like roofing iron), I make my prints on flat sheets of metal.

Are the colours true?

The colours are rich and vibrant, but may not be identical to the paper version. This is because the process cannot be fully calibrated like we do for Giclee printing. We do several test prints to ensure the colours are as intended.

The artwork I like doesn't have a metal print option - can I still get it on metal?

In most cases, yes. Get in touch as a lot of my earlier pieces don't have a metal option loaded yet, but they are available for order. In general, I've only loaded metal options for large and extra-large prints, but if you're after a smaller one, do get in touch. Use the chat button or email me at judi@artbyjlm.com.
