I was inspired over Labour Weekend to create one of my observational 3x3 watercolour doodles. The aim of the game is to observe nine things and then paint them using a limited palette. Most of these came from a walk in Ōtari-Wilton's Bush, which is filled with rare and unusual NZ natives.

From top to bottom and left to right, Alseuosmia pusilla leaf and bud, kōwhai tree, red mānuka flower, rewarewa flower bud, kōwhai flower, kōwhai leaf, Clematis paniculata flower, kererū, and some sort of daisy.

I hope you enjoy these wee studies. I start these by swatching out nine patches using just three pigments of varying tonal value (rich green gold, quinacridone rose, and sap green by Daniel Smith) then using each patch for a tiny study. I also used quinacridone burnt orange and neutral tint, some watercolour pencils for texture, Staedler fine liner pen, and Dr Ph Martin’s bleed-proof white. Oh and of course some gold bling! Can’t forget the gold 💛

The original is available along with limited-edition A5-size hand-embellished prints. They are printed on fine-art paper, hand-signed, and embellished with gold watercolour paints. The edition length is 30.
