This young takahē, Te Āwhiorangi, hatched at Zealandia to a couple of elderly, retired birds. He was an excellent escape artist who had a knack for getting out of the temporary enclosure, leaving Mum and Dad on the other side. He gave them a few gray feathers for sure!

The reference photo for this piece was taken as Te Āwhiorangi was coming into his adult feathers and just before he was taken to Burwood Takahē Centre, where he was to learn how to be a wild takahē.

This artwork started as a photograph, but I used a photo-artistic approach to create a soft, sketchy pastel artwork. Because it is a digital creation, there is no "original" painting. Instead, it comes as a limited-edition fine-art print on archival heavyweight fine-art paper. Each print is hand-signed and editioned, and medium prints and above come with signed certificates of authenticity.

Fine-art paper prints on archival, heavyweight paper also use archival inks. The stated sizes are the printed area, and there is an additional white margin. Metal prints are on matte-finish Chromaluxe aluminium and have no margin. They come with a floating hanger and do not require additional framing unless desired.
