Flipping and turning through the air, a tiny pīwakawaka fantail chases an even tinier meal. Pīwakawaka rarely fly in a straight line. Instead, they use their fanned tail to twist and turn with incredible aerodynamic skills.
This piece is called "An Eye on the Prize," and you just know this fantail will not go hungry. I photographed this fantail at Zealandia late on a sunny winter afternoon. The midges were out in full force, emboldened by the unexpected warmth, and the pīwakawaka were loving it, excitedly swooping through the clouds of insects with great joy and much cheeping.
This piece comes as a limited-edition fine-art print in multiple sizes on archival heavyweight fine-art paper or fine-art metal for larger sizes. Each print is hand-signed and editioned, and medium prints and above come with signed certificates of authenticity.
