Misty Morepork watercolour [original | embellished prints]

A sweet little ruru (morepork) with the biggest eyes stares out into a swirling star-filled misty night sky nestled within a blanket of leaves. The scan doesn't do justice to the lovely luminescence (but see video below). Embellished prints are also available (A4).

Created with Schmincke's super-granulating "Haze" watercolours, I built this piece up into richly textured moody artwork using a limited palette of subtle blues and browns, accented with handmade gold watercolours. The granulation creates fascinating and unpredictable patterns on the textured cold press watercolour paper as the pigments settle into the nooks and crannies. With lots of water loading, it literally requires you to "go with the flow" and trust in the outcome.

The embellished A4 prints are created on the highest quality fine-art paper, printed with archival inks, then embellished with gold watercolour paint. They come in a limited edition of 30. The prints are shipped in a clear bag with conservation-grade backing board.

The original watercolour painting is on the highest quality 9x12" 140lb Arches 100% cotton cold-press watercolour paper. Paints: Schmincke Horadam Aquarell Haze black, brown, blue, and indigo; Daniel Smith buff titanium, Csy Art Gallery moonglow and crystal gold handmade watercolours. The framed original was accepted for exhibition in the Spring 2022 show at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, and was SOLD in the 2023 Paekākāriki Art Show.
