With a burst of sunlight, two tīeke saddlebacks prepare to take on the day. Rare and endangered tīeke spend much of their time foraging through the dim forest undergrowth, so seeing them in sunlight is always a delight. Tīeke Sunrise grew from wanting to capture that sudden flash of life and colour. In this photo-artistic piece, I brought two birds together among flowering rewarewa, whose colours echo the bright wattles and chestnut saddle across each bird’s back. The rising branch and warm, glowing background give the piece its early-morning energy.
