Ruru | Morepork Owls

Ruru (morepork) are Aotearoa’s only surviving native owl species. I heard them calling for years before I finally saw one, and I’ve been fascinated by them ever since. They may be small, but with their enormous eyes, secretive daytime roosts, and distinctive night-time call, they have an extraordinary presence.

This collection brings together my ruru artworks, from watchful guardians and moonlit intruders to gentler pieces about love, hope, and companionship. They all begin with my own photographs of wild ruru, which I then transform into fine-art prints using photography, digital painting, and other mixed-media techniques.

Ruru carry many meanings for people, including guardianship, memory, mystery, and connection with the unseen. They also have a knack for appearing at moments people never forget. Read more about my encounters with ruru, their symbolism, and the stories behind the art.
